Magnolia, Seattle

Named for a tree that wasn't there.

In 1856, a U.S. Coast Survey officer looked up at the bluff west of Seattle, saw its red-barked trees and named the place Magnolia.

They were madronas. The name stuck anyway.

We take a different approach: we check the details. Twice.
